This monastic citadel of the Third century, immersed in the Chiantigiana countryside, was once the monastery of Certosian priests who retired here in search of an isolated and tranquil place to pray. It was struck by an earthquake in 1895, then was entrusted to its actual inhabitants, the Cistercensian Benedictines. Open to the public, here one might visit the Palazzo Acciaiuoli, the Pinacoteca, the Church of San Lorenzo and all the rooms of the monastery, the crypt, the dining hall, and the enormous cloister.

Known throughout the world for its ancient production of ceramics and baked clay, Impruneta is a medieval small village which came into existence during the Etruscan period. It is set in the most spectacular countryside near Chianti. In the centre of this village there is a piazza with open galleries and the Basilica of the Holy Mary of Impruneta, and where there are preserved the baked clay masterpieces of Michelozzo and Luca Della Robbia. It is ideal to get to Impruneta during one of its country fairs. In particular, the Festa dell’Uva (Feast of the Grape) is held the last Sunday in September, and the Fiera di San Luca (The Fair of Saint Luca) is held at mid-October.
